When you say you want to have it all, what does that mean? Urban Couture Life has touched on the subject of having it all before but today I’ll address it from a much more personal perspective. As life happens, you have to re-evaluate what you really want, and revisit your action plan to make it happen.

Wanting it all in the past meant I wanted the career, the husband, the kids, the family, the money; everything. What I found, was that in 2017 I have to strategically assess my position. I’m that person that life has happened to that needs to re-evaluate. I have a daughter in college, a little one in 2nd grade, and a brand new one year old babygirl. I’m no superwoman, I’ve had many moments in the last year that I’ve definitely wanted to just give up and settle for a normal, traditional life. I could just be a soccer mom, teacher, and hum drum local seamstress. No more thinking of a masterplan to build a brand and launch a line; fashion weeks, hours of drawing, grinding online, burning the midnight oil; all while attempting to maintain my motherhood and some type of so-called love life. But that’s just not me.

2017 is the first year EVER that I’ve taken the time out to complete a full production plan for TSX Design House from week 2 through week 52.

I remember covering the production planning process in college, but I never took the time to create one. It was a challenge ladies and gentleman, and it took me a couple of weeks to complete it. It’s an extensive process! And this current plan doesn’t even include my household and family obligations. To actually see what I have to do from week to week to make things happen was an eye opener. Now that I have weekly goals, I’m constantly trying to figure out how to complete each task, and keeping a tally of when I don’t. It’s upsetting when I ‘ve had to push something to the next week and add it to the list of things that have to be completed. But, every week has been better and better, and it’s encouraging when I see what’s been done. The most valuable lesson I learned was that without proper planning, I m just aimlessly floating from project to project. Lying it all out puts the work I have to do in perspective, and in real time.

Collections

I’m doing 2 complete collections this year. A Spring/Summer 2018 and a Fall/Winter 2018. I have it broken down from concept to creation week to week. This method enabled me to take a broad look at what all has to be done, so I can work it into my 24/7. I’ve also gone back to the focus of my brand which is chakras, tantra, cultural authentication, longevity, and sustainability.

Budget

I’m playing no games or taking no prisoners this year. With another baby and my oldest in college I’m on an extremely strict budget. I’m trying to invest more into my company, marketing, bills, my home, and my family. I’m laser focused on my future. So no travel for me. I’m going to attend WWDMagic in August 2017 instead of February, and I’ll definitely be showing in September but I haven’t decided where.

Social Media

I am going to harness the power of my social media accounts and omni channel sharing tools. I’m working on a full scale marketing plan that will include Facebook and Twitter ads, Instagram/Snapchat/YouTube/Periscope videos, giveaways and possibly bringing in a third party marketer.

Online Stores

I now have 3 stores online: TSX Design House on Etsy   TSX Design House on Art Of Where and TSX Design House on Zazzle . I’ve devoted time each week to adding new products and added them to my marketing mix.

Writing

I also blocked out time to write. More time to blog, write for clients, and work on my book.

No Sleep Till Brooklyn

Diary Of A Fashion Designer: Phoenix Fashion Week Fall 2015

Phoenix is the quickly becoming the premiere fashion event in the Southwest. October 1-3 boutiques, emerging and established designers all come together for three days of sales and shows. Just straight fashion hustle and flow. So far, I’m loving it! I was impressed by the whole operation. The PR was on point, the setup was very chic and metropolitan, and I enjoyed every minute of the shows. It was all very, Southwest luxury.

Emerging Designers

Day one, was all about lifestyle brands. Evine has a competition for the emerging designers for a live TV show on their network selling the featured collection. The four brand s from October first were Charmosa Swimwear, Haute Body and Lily V and Medium Apparel.

Charmosa Swimwear of San Francisco has Brazilian roots. Its, elegant, sexy, and very fashion forward. I love water and own so many swimsuits that I can t keep track, so I would wear every piece I saw on the runway. The designer is a woman who is a woman, wife, mother and has strong family connections within her brand and it shows. Popular colors were red, orange, yellow, green and blue. Elements that I noticed were tie-dye, fringe coverups, rouching in the bum area, and high waist bottoms. the detailing stood out and kind of popped no matter where you were seated which speaks to the craftsmanship of the pieces.

HauteBody of Los Angeles is fashion forward athletic wear. Being a lover of yoga myself, I could picture having every piece in my closet. Yoga pants, jackets, sports tops, capris, and shorts and a catsuit came in black, white, pink and blue floral print, heather gray, white net, wet look black, and metallic silver. This collection was futuristic while staying true to its athletic roots, and versatile. I could see it being worn by a wide market around the globe.

Lily V of Peoria Illinois had a collection of casual wear. You could clearly see the 70’s inspiration throughout all the pieces. Fringe, crop tops, ponchos, bell bottoms,  box pleats, tie-dye, tribal print jackets, and a hippie vest were in black, white, blue, purple, burnt orange, brown and mixed prints. This designer is from the Midwest so the color ways were very fall inspired and the jackets looked soft and warm.

Medium Apparel of Phoenix was the edgy, outside the box brand of the bunch. The “Counter Culture”The only designated urban wear in the running, their collection was straight forward street inspired with a mild touch of preppy. T-shirts, oxford style shirts, jackets, and hats donned with edgy graphics(lips, Benjamin Franklin, Teddy Bear with X’s for eyes, verbiage, army fatigue print, florals prints. The colorways were army green, black, white, blue, red, and baby blue. RocaWear sponsored the jeans to complete the looks.

Based on global marketability and trends, my pick for the winner was tied between Charmosa Swimwear and Haute Body. Lily V was a little too Boho for me and Medium Apparel seemed like it had already been done so many times. Although they both rocked, I couldn’t picture them selling on a shopping network. Established Brands

The established designers I got to see were Devereux Golf(men’s) and Elevee Lifestyle Golf(custom made men and women’s). These brands have established clientele, and have already made there mark on the industry. Inspiration from the 70’s was clear. Fitted styles, clean lines, simplicity, and classic looks dominated the runway for both brands. Preppy looks reminiscent of Ralph Lauren contained color blocking, stripes, plaids, in colors like melon, sea foam green, red, blue, khaki, black, and white. Elevee has a celebrity clientele that speaks for itself, and Devererux has a history that speaks for itself. I just have one question, why are some of the shorts for the men so short? 2 Trends 2 Watch

The top two trends to watch this season are total fashion oxy-morons. They both are simple, yet so complicated.

Color Blocking

Color blocking is piping hot this season. But one wrong move, and you just look like you work on The Enterprise. It can tend to appear as if you’re wearing a uniform. The good thing is tat this technique gives the appearance of curves, and adds a tailored effect to most garments. Tailored clothes, always look more expensive, and you want posh swag. If the color blocking is built into the pattern of the garment it should fit like a glove.

Stay away from fabrics that are stiff. Check out some lycra blends, they provide a good fit for any body type. Fabric without body will just look cheap, but leather is probably the one exception to the rule. Fitted sleeves are ok, but limit thee long sleeves, especially if the piece as color blocking in the sleeves. You’ll find a variety that are basic black and one other color. Don’t be afraid to choose a style with two contrasting colors.

The Embellished Collar

The collar is a basic design element for any shirt or dress with a bodice. Rhinestones, pearls, beads, and metal studs made some major noise this year. Gracing the catwalks during fashion week, and on racks at every major department store. But you know, this type of style can sometimes be two rhinestones away from looking totally gaudy.

Don’t buy anything with cheap design elements( rhinestones etc.). The focal point of your outfit will be the collar. The embellishments highlight that area, people’s eyes will be drawn straight to it. It will make a $300 dress look like a $30 dress. But good quality rhinestones have the power to make a $30 dress look like a $300 dress. It just adds an air of quality.
